生长因子多为广义的肽激素，有胰岛素、表皮生长因子(EGF)、成纤细胞生长因子(fibroblast growth factor，FGF)、血小板来源增殖因子(platelet-derived growth factor，PDGF)以及生长激素释放抑制因子(somatostatin=SRIH)等。在肽激素之外，皮质醇和甲状腺素(T3)等也属于生长因子。在这些物质中，已知激素之外的物质可作为培养细胞生长因素已被发现，但推测也是活体的发育因子。所以认为组织培养是探索活体发育因子的良好的实验手段。简而言之，微生物生命活动*，而微生物自身又不能合成的微量有机物质都可称为生长因子。
