事情的缘起是《新英格兰医学杂志》的一篇报道：美国宾夕法尼亚州一名57岁的妇女因为打死了一只蚊子，造成肌肉受到小孢子虫属真菌感染而死亡。研究人员推测，这名妇女是把蚊子拍死在了皮肤上，被打烂的蚊子尸体残骸进入皮肤，造成感染。由于《新英格兰医学杂志》是世界上连续出版时间zui久的医学期刊，此事引起了更多网友的关注。
